FAQ

Q: What IS vided.org?
A: Vided.org is a free service, and gives you these possibilities: Q: Vided.org?
A: Vided.org is a project run by me, a master student at UiB. I've got a vlog, currently a project log. It's a unfinished project, which means that a lot of stuff doesn't work, and some stuff needs to be done. I hope you will participate by telling me what you like, what confuses you, what you want and what features I can abandon. Vided.org is a online tool, a free service, currently needing beta testers, etc.

Q: That sounds nice, too nice actually!
A: OK, not all features are finished yet. And also, this is a time-limited "offer", which means that it'll last for maybe a year. Then, if there's still any interest for it, I'll move everything away from the university and hope to provide this as a non-profit service. I'll free the source code, which means that anyone can do that as well.

Q: Why are you doing this? Aren't there enough similar tools around etc.?
A: As you know, I'm writing my master thesis right now, and I want a videoblog tool for "everybody". This means that as many as possible should be able to use it. You shouldn't need any other equipment than a camera (of any sort) and a computer (at a school or a net cafe), including any operating system (limited by what your camera supports I guess). This means that vided.org will always be somehow limited, but for people with simple needs, it could be _all_ they need.

Q: What do I need, systems requirements, etc?
A: You need a broadband connection, Quicktime or another SMIL-compatible video viewer and a computer fast enough to decode MPEG4 video. Recommended at least 500 MHz.

Q: What is the specifications for the server this software is running on?
A: It's a Celeron 300A, 256 RAM, 160 GB storage Athlon 1800+, 512 RAM, 80 + 160GB storage, 100mbit internet connection through UiB. FreeBSD Ubuntu Linux is running PHP, mySQL, FFmpeg, MPlayer and a lot of other programs as well (TMTM).

Q: Which cameras and other equipment have been successfully tested with vided.org?
A: These are _tested_ and found to be working:
Q: Licensing?
A: For all videos uploaded to this site, this license applies:
Creative Commons License
This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.5 License.
If you don't like this license, you won't like the nature of this system either; sharing, collaboration, being creative together.

Q: OK, I'm convinced, what do I have to do to get an account?
A: Please signup here. You can contact me by e-mail st06371$student.uib.no (change $ to @) if you have any questions or viewpoints)

Q: Could you explain the video editing to me?
A: I'll try to make a step-by-step guide.
 1. First of all, select a project: This can be done in three ways: Select one of your existing projects, make a new project, or copy a project published by someone else.
 2. Edit the project by pressing the four "vcr-buttons", "move left", "move right", "move first" and "move last" (And "play"). These buttons puts the videoclips in different order. You can also decide for how long time each videoclip should be played, but remember that you can only change one clip at a time. The "update" button is only updating the current clip.
 3. You can add captions any time, but remember that also here only one clip can be updated at a time. The important part here is syncronising text to video, and right now this is simplified: Captions will change every 4 seconds, and this is controlled by enter/newline.
 4. Press VIEW any time, the current movie will always be shown
Q: How can I get formatting in comment fields?
A: Links are made like this: [link]http://www.site.org[/link] or like this: http://www.link.net Pictures are inserted this way: this is bold this is italic this is underlined

PS: This is a nice walkthrough about basic film making.

Q: I've got problems with playing video projects, or sound is randomly disappearing while viewing a project ?!?
A: So do I one some systems. I can't find the reason for this. The problems only appears while playing SMIL, the single mpeg4 clips all work fine. The version of your Quicktime viewer is essential. Version 6.52 works quite good, usually, but it's having a few problems with sound randomly going quiet. Bug in Quicktime? Moving the progress bar back and forth again fixes this, for unknown reason, but this is a quite bad "solution" of a quite annoying problem. Version 7.0x has worked flawlessly on my development system, also regarding the sound issue mentiones, while on other computers, it's reporting about "can't find video clip" even though the clip exists at mentioned URL. I don't have access to a lot of Macs, I don't know if they are better or worse. I'm looking at the problem, but it's quite complicated, and I can't manage to reproduce it on different computers. If I've got Firefox 1.07 and Quicktime 7.03 on two computers, one might work fine, while the other computer has problems. This is a cry for help, I guess, in my own FAQ. What is factor X, resulting in these problems?

Q: Are the video clips ipod video compatible?
A: I've got no Ipod video, but I've got reports from people that the videos works on Ipod video. The video projects in SMIL format does NOT work, however.
